Belly Breathing Exercise

Belly Breathing Exercise by Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist Anna Belay

This Belly Breathing Exercise (Diaphragmatic) is one of my favourite simple exercises I can perform on a daily basis. This is a great exercise that reduces tension/stress and promotes relaxation

  1. Lie on your back on a flat surface (or bed) with your knees bent. Use a pillow under your head and knees for support, if it’s more comfortable
  2. Place one hand on your belly (just below your rib cage) and the other on your upper chest
  3.  Breathe in through your nose, letting the air in towards your belly. The hand on the belly should rise, while the hand on your chest should remain still
  4. Breathe out through pursed lips, and allow the belly move down to its original position
