Christmas “BREAK”
By: Jonathon Clay, Physiotherapist/Partner
It has been years since I have had the privilege to write a story for the Newsletter! So many great staff members have graced these pages with their words and pictures of family, trips, weddings, babies, and more!
So I thought I would hit the front cover of the Spinal Column this month with some woe – and Denbo (you’ll get it later, I promise…) about my trip to Vancouver earlier this month for a West End Physiotherapy (WEP) visit and team Christmas party with the crew from our clinic out west.
SOME of you may not know that in the summer of 2022, the partners of SOS Physiotherapy acquired a gorgeous clinic in Downtown Vancouver that I heard about through the business coaching I was in at the time. MOST of you know that I was born in Vancouver and lived there most of my life before moving here in 2004, so having a clinic on the other side of the country, not so far-fetched!
The WEP team of three in 2022 has now grown to 10 and we are continuing to build on the same culture and values that SOS Physiotherapy holds dear in Ontario (Check out that grad wall!) I fly out there a few times a year to meet with staff (had lunch with Lou at Ramen Denbo 😉 on Robson) and bug our Patient Experience Manager Paulina. And usually around the beginning of December, we hold our annual Christmas party, this year being the second year we have hosted it at my Mom’s place in Coquitlam. Some great food, gifts from some Elf that showed up (I think he was spotted on Granville St a couple of years ago)…and games that required physical traits that this 53 year old barely held up to!
But I can’t leave out the best (and worst) part of my trip out there…My brother and I were lucky enough to get tickets to a Vancouver Canucks hockey game! Don’t ask me the outcome (Detroit kicked our @#*%# 4-0) but it was great to hang with my older brother for the evening and watch our favourite team. Unfortunately, on the way home from the game, running down some slippery stairs trying to catch the skytrain, I blew a tire and ended up crumpled in a heap at the bottom of the stairs. My brother borderline carried me onto the train like Forrest Gump pulling Lieutenant Dan from the bushline.
Soooo the damage was done…after hobbling through airports the next day, and x-rays back in Waterloo the day after that, a fractured bone in my leg (fibula for you experts), my Christmas BREAK was certainly not what I had planned!

Fall Prevention and Staying Active During Winter Weather
Brrr, it’s cold out there! With winter and icy weather comes safety risks, such as getting injured from a strain while shoveling (or slipping on ice as you walk in a parking lot!)
Having your balance assessed this season could help you to avoid fall-related injuries. Give SOS Physiotherapy a call today to schedule an appointment, so we can help you feel steady on your feet!
Our therapists are the balance experts in the field and want to make sure our patients lower their fall risk as much as possible.

Staying Safe and Active In Winter
Between the limited daylight hours, chilly temperatures, and occasionally icy conditions outside, staying safe and healthy can be challenging. Anything you can do to keep active during the winter months is a step in the right direction!
Ice and snow are the biggest threats that winter poses, especially to older patients! Slipping on ice can result in nasty, painful falls. However, with preparation and planning, you can stay safe and active in the winter months. This may sometimes feel difficult to accomplish due to injuries and inclement weather, but knowing the proper steps to take can help you keep doing the things you enjoy no matter the conditions outside.
The most common injuries related to cold weather happen from falls on icy sidewalks, steps, driveways, and porches. Ideally, you will stay off the ice when possible. Walking on ice is extremely dangerous, regardless of how good your balance is. Do your best to keep your steps and walkways free of ice with sand, salt, or cat litter.
If you plan to run or walk on snowy, icy surfaces, attaching snow or ice spikes to your boots or running shoes will help you maintain traction to reduce the risk of falls. Be careful when wearing spikes on the pavement as they are designed to penetrate the ground and affect your balance.
How Can a Balance Expert Help Me Reduce My Fall Risk?
The physiotherapists at SOS Physiotherapy are balance experts who can help you improve your balance and fight back against the risk of falling this winter.
Your therapist will perform a thorough physical examination to identify the source of your pain and/or injuries if they are present. Your mobility, strength, balance, and gait will be assessed as well to determine your fall risk. This information will help us create a program that includes targeted manual techniques, mobility work, strengthening, and any appropriate balance and gait techniques that can help keep you upright and on your feet this season!
What Should I Expect During Therapy?
The first thing you should know about therapy for balance is that this kind of therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach. Your program will be specific to your needs and wants and fit into your lifestyle.
Some of the interventions you can expect to experience at SOS Physiotherapy are:
- Strengthening exercises: These exercises will address muscle weakness which is often a primary contributing factor to poor balance and falls during winter weather. With strength and balance training, patients are better equipped to recover from unexpected lapses in gait or a momentary loss of balance to prevent falls.
- Gait training: Gait training will include activities to improve gait mechanics and increase your confidence and safety in navigating across different terrains (icy sidewalks, porches, parking lots) and around various obstacles, such as snow. Our physiotherapists will also evaluate the need for an assistive device or perhaps adjust the device you are currently using.
- Static and dynamic balance training: This kind of training will be incorporated into your physiotherapy treatment to help your body learn how to better respond to environmental challenges to your balance. For example, you may be asked to stand on one leg while performing a mentally challenging task, such as reciting the alphabet or reading a paragraph of text out loud. Our physiotherapists will also teach you balance strategies to help mitigate fall risk.
- Endurance training may improve muscle endurance and improve aerobic capacity for activity. Both will reduce fatigue as a risk factor for falls when walking or completing daily tasks.

Here’s to Fun Small Town Traditions!

The Elmira staff team were happy to once again serve as a warming centre for those roaming the streets and taking in the sights of the Elmira Moonlight Madness event last week. Such a special time. There were carolers, a tree lighting, an ice sculpture being crafted, freshly made maple taffy in the snow, and of course, Santa! 😉 In our little clinic, we were happy to serve cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider, and colouring pages for the kids. It’s always a special time with the community. Thanks for coming out!
Discovery Visit

You may have noticed in another section of this very newsletter, our announcement of the New Year Celebration happening in late January. This is our once-a-year opportunity where all of our senior clinicians give up their free time to help anyone in pain get back to doing what they love!
For one day only we’ll be offering free screens to anyone with aches and pains or injuries to help you know what is wrong and what you can do to start the year off pain-free! Join an SOS GRAD WALL near you to celebrate your accomplishment!
With well over 100 years of combined experience, it often just takes a conversation to know what the problem is and what the right treatment plan might be for successful outcomes. If you’re not sure if Physiotherapy (or Chiropractic or Massage!) are right for you, or if you have any pain even if it’s minor…come in for a FREE Discovery Visit in the New Year! See this edition and an SOS email near you for details!
SOS Hits the Classroom

Inspiring Future Health Leaders
In November Adam Dafoe and I ran our second Taping Course for the Specialist High School Major (SHSM) students at KCI. These grade 11 and 12 students are exploring careers Health Science and other major University Programs.
Over three hours, we talked about the profession of Physiotherapy, different types of injuries, and strategies for taping some common ailments. Best of all, the students gained hands-on experience, practicing taping techniques on each other. We loved their great questions and enthusiasm—what a fantastic day for some future leaders in our field!
If you or someone you know would like SOS to visit your high school classroom in the KW, Elmira, or Guelph area to discuss Physiotherapy and possibly run a taping session like this one, reach out to Jon Clay Physiotherapist/Partner at belmont@sosphysiotherapy.ca (they’ll forward your message to me!). We love these community outreach opportunities and would be happy to discuss options tailored to your group.

🎄SOS Holiday Party 🎅
Every year we get to look forward to a big SOS Org Holiday Party and this year did not disappoint. We were hosted at the lovely Abe Erb in Waterloo and the food and drinks were divine. This year our group (including significant others) reached nearly 100 people! The vibe was upbeat, formal, and cozy. There were delicious appetizers served, followed by a taco bar and desserts. After speeches and presents we even opened up a dance floor for those who were ready to really let loose! It’s such a special time to mingle with staff from all of our clinics, get dressed up, and simply have FUN. We are grateful for such a fantastic team of people to work with and celebrate together.
