Flamingo Twist Balance Exercise by Physiotherapist Amanda Calford
This exercise is great for challenging your balance. Specifically, it helps you train for keeping your balance while reacting to shifting loads like leaning forward or pulling on a door.
How to do this exercise:
- Find an appropriate place for this exercise and grab a small weight. You should be in an area with enough space to move your arms freely, but also consider safety. Having a chair nearby or performing the exercise near a counter are great ideas. *Tip – if you don’t have a small weight, get creative! A water bottle or laundry detergent also work great.
- Stand on one foot. When you have your balance, raise the weight in front of your chest with arms straight.
- With the weight in one arm, move the weight out to your side. Slowly, bring the weight back to in front of your chest, and repeat in the opposite direction.
*Try slowly passing the weight back and forth for about 20-30 seconds.

*Never do an exercise that causes you pain*
